Bees and their plight Empty Bees and their plight

There is a new documentary going around that is being shown at local film festivals. If you care about the fruits and vegetables that you eat, this is a must see! It deals with the issue around our vanishing bees, and the hidden reason behind Colony Collapse Disorder. Check out the trailer and other teasers about what is in the documentary, see where all it is being shown, and get your friends to join you.

Decline in Honey Bees Now a Global Phenomenon, Says United Nations
By Michael McCarthy, Environment Editor, The Independent, March 10, 2011

"The mysterious collapse of honey-bee colonies is becoming a global phenomenon, scientists working for the United Nations have revealed."

Full article at this link:

Last year I read an article about a fruit growing region in China where all of the bees had been wiped out (by pesticides, I believe) and the farmers had to pollinate all of their trees manually. Talk about labor intensive!

Note: Thanks for posting about the documentary. It looks like a good film.

I'll have to look over the links and such when I have more time. The Science Friday broadcast on my favorite NPR station April 1st included a segment featuring the bee curator of the American Museum of Natural History (no fooling!) which was interesting. He touched on Colony Collapse Disorder only very briefly but one thing he said about it is that there may not be one definitive cause involved.

There is a movement to get a shorter version of this documentary produced to get it into the classroom for teachers to use to educate their students. Want to be a part of that movement? Here is the link, you can donate as little as $1, or get yourself a copy of the DVD to donate to your favorite school with a $25 donation:
