Marcellus Shale & the issues around 'fracking'

Post by Elizabeth on Mon Apr 04, 2011 2:20 pm

If you have not seen the documentary 'Gasland', everyone should see it to understand the issues around natural gas. Look for local viewings or rent it from Netflix/Blockbuster, talk about eye opening! They are presently drilling in 38 of our 50 states and in other countries. Everyone needs to know about this environmental catastrophe we have on our horizon.

Register for an online discussion set up with the documentary's creator, Josh Fox, on Wednesday, April 13th @ 5-6 pm PT / 6-7 pm MT / 7-8 pm CT / 8-9 pm ET.

When Josh was asked to lease his land for drilling, he went on a cross-country trek for information that uncovered a trail of 'secrets, lies and contamination'. He proved it wasn't an urban legend that a Pennsylvania town was reporting that the residents were able to light their
drinking water on fire. Others were also able to ignite their water. Yes, that is shown in the movie. 'This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown,
part showdown.'

Our country is undergoing an unprecedented gas drilling boom that is putting the drinking water supplies for millions of Americans at risk. Please consider taking action by letting your voice be heard, by asking your Members of Congress to co-sponsor the FRAC and BREATHE Acts:

Secret Gas Drilling Chemicals Don't Belong In Our Drinking Water

NPR - All Things Considered: Natural Gas May Not Be 'Clean' Energy Source
by JOEL ROSE

Listen to the Story

April 14, 2011
Natural gas may not be as "clean" an energy source as advertised. A study released this week by professors at Cornell University found that significant amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas, may be escaping into the atmosphere as a result of shale gas extraction. The natural gas industry calls the study flawed — and says the timing is intended to influence the debate in Albany over how and when new gas drilling in New York State can begin.
